Why Does My Toilet Seal Keep Leaking? How To Guide For A Permanent Fix.

As a fourth-generation plumber, I’ve seen countless homeowners struggle with leaking toilet seals that require repeated replacement. The root cause of this issue is simple: the traditional wax seal cannot handle toilet movement or fluctuations in the floor. If you've found yourself constantly replacing a wax toilet seal, you’re likely experiencing these common problems.

What Happens When a Toilet Seal Leaks?

When a toilet has even the slightest movement, whether from initial installation or over time, it leads to the compression of the wax seal. Unfortunately, wax seals do not have the ability to rebound once compressed. The result is a weakened seal, forming a low point where water or sewer gas can leak out. These leaks are often small—think about a teaspoon every flush —but they increase and add up over time. In many cases, these leaks go unnoticed because the water is absorbed by the subfloor, creating a hidden issue.

The leak may go undetected until it eventually shows up on the floor around the toilet, as a stain in the flooring, or even as a wet spot on the ceiling below the toilet (if it's on the second floor).

Why Do Leaky Wax Rings Keep Re-Occurring?

Each time a new wax seal is installed, it’s likely that the subfloor has absorbed some moisture from previous leaks. This damp wood causes the subfloor to swell, which can create small movements underneath the toilet. If the floor doesn’t have a chance to dry out completely before the new seal is applied, the small movements continue, setting the stage for another leak. This creates a cycle where the wax seal is compromised repeatedly, causing leaks to reoccur. Now that you understand the root problem; it time to replace leaking wax toilet seal.

To solve this recurring issue, we developed a wax-free toilet seal; One-N-Done Toilet Seal and Toilet Flange Repair Kit. Unlike traditional wax seals, One-N-Done is designed to handle toilet movement and prevent leaks caused by subfloor moisture and over-compression. Here's how it works:

Handles Toilet Movement

The toilet seal movement solution is the One-N-Done toilet seal that’s engineered to grip tightly around the horned toilet outlet (the part under the toilet) and self-adjust to any toilet flange depth. Whether your toilet experiences side-to-side rocking or shifts slightly over time, the One-N-Done seal ensures a watertight, secure fit. We like to say that One-N-Done seals even if your toilet doubles as a rocking chair!

Reinforced Bolts to Prevent Over-tightening

Our kit includes reinforced nylon bolts and nuts that prevent over-tightening, which is a common cause of toilet flange damage. Over-tightening can cause cracks and breaks in the flange, leading to more significant leaks. The One-N-Done bolts are designed to securely hold your toilet in place without risking damage to the flange. We also offer optional metal bolts for those who prefer them, but the nylon bolts are more than strong enough to keep your toilet secure. The strong nylon bolts are also easy to trim using the included diamond saw for a perfect finish.

Easy-to-Clean Toilet Caps

The One-N-Done toilet leak repair kit also includes easy-to-clean toilet caps that lock in place with just a quarter turn. These caps are not only simple to install, but they also prevent grime buildup, ensuring your toilet area stays sanitary and easy to maintain.

How to fix toilet flange:

  1. Place the Kit Over the Flange The One-N-Done kit works for flanges that are 1/8” above the floor to 1 1/2” below the floor. Simply place the repair kit over the damaged or low toilet flange and center the bolts, screwing through the flange to secure it.
  2. Attach the Toilet After anchoring the repair kit, set the toilet on top. The One-N-Done seal will automatically adjust to the flange depth, ensuring a tight and reliable fit.
  3. Tighten the Bolts Tighten the nylon bolts by hand (a quarter turn past hand-tight); to prevent toilet flange damage and create a secure toilet installation. Once tightened, use the included diamond saw to cut the excess bolt length. For metal bolts, tighten with a 7/16” wrench.
  4. Check for Leaks Turn the water supply back on, wipe down all water connections with a dry paper towel, and inspect the area for any leaks. Check around the toilet base and flush to ensure everything remains dry.
